Now Thats HOT in Hoedspruit

A family of nine elephants has found a new home at the Blue Canyon Game Conservancy near Hoedspruit, Mpumalanga - an area where these majestic beasts used to roam freely, before it was converted into farmland.
The African elephants were captured from the Sabi Sands region by wildlife entrepreneur Trevor Jordan and renowned wildlife veterinarian, Dr Douw Grobler; and transported and released into the Blue Canyon Conservancy on Saturday.

"Dr Grobler and his team identified a group of nine elephants early on Saturday morning and we managed to successfully capture them - a matriarch plus seven young females and one young male," Jordan told News24 on Tuesday.

"We will be going back to catch a dominant bull within the next two months as soon as the herd has settled into its new home," Jordan added. According to Jordan the elephants have joined the already present leopard and rhino in the conservancy.

"We will also be adding a lion pride within the next six weeks and a buffalo herd within the next 12 months, to secure the Big Five in this area," he told News24.

The Blue Canyon Game Conservancy is the brainchild of Jordan who in 2007, together with his neighbours convinced a number of other private properties to join together to create a new environment in the Hoedspruit area for the Big Five to roam freely.

The conservation project consists of 15 000 hectares of land fitting neatly between the Greater Kruger National park and the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve.

"The aim in establishing the Blue Canyon Game Conservancy was not only to open up new ground for elephant herds so that we could play a role in averting the need for active elephant population management in overstocked reserves, but also to ensure that we balance economic development with the conservation ethics, requirements and the beauty of this area for generations to come," Jordan explained.

A pioneer behind such commercial wildlife conservancy concepts as the game reserve share block schemes and wildlife estates, Jordan is well positioned to ensure the success of this new undertaking.
Originally the Blue Canyon Conservancy area in Hoedspruit was proclaimed a gaming area in the 1980s. However, soon after, the area was used for cattle farming.
This was not sustainable nor viable as one needs bio-diversity and cattle generally was overstocked which led to overgrazing. This in turn led to erosion and bush encroachment of indigenous pioneer species.
"The creation of a game conservancy has generated far more work for local communities, transference of skill, job creation, thousands of foreign visitors, and more hospitality," Jordan explained to News24.

"The overall economic value has increased substantially in this area and Blue Canyon Conservancy is just another example of how man and his environment can co-exist."
"I believe that every developer has a responsibility to the land and the people who live upon it. A responsibility to ensure that the vision the land inspired is brought to life, no matter how difficult or time consuming," said Jordan.
"Passion helps you see the 'big five' roaming free, where only cattle and fences existed. It allows you to succeed where others fail.
"I'm simply pleased that my team has opened up more affordable land for the introduction of truly astounding African animals who will bring both spiritual and fiscal wealth to the community of Hoedspruit," Jordan told News24.
The conservancy is not entirely open yet to the public, as lodges are still being built within the next two years.

Sustainable Living Festival

The Kruger to Canyons (K2C) Biosphere (UNESCO registered October 2001) will be hosting the first of its annually planned SUSTAINABLE LIVING FESTIVAL from the 15th - 17th May 2008.

The 3 day festival will showcase projects, products and organisations involved in Sustainable Development and Biosphere related projects and practices. One of the keystone events within the festival is the hosting of the K2C Biodiversity Day on Saturday the 17th May.

This event has come about as K2C will be the focal point for the International Biodiversity Day which in turn will be presented on by Marthinus van Schalkwyk as a side event at COP9 (Conference of the Parties) during the International Convention on Biological Diversity, being held in Bonn this year towards the end of May. This venture will be accomplished by a synergy created by a wide spectrum of partners collaborating to raise awareness of responsible eco-system living within our very unique landscape with the K2C area.

Apart from 3 days of exhibitions, the festival will be launched with the K2C AGM, and thereafter followed by a number of workshops focusing on Sustainable Development, Responsible Tourism and Organic and Biodynamic Agriculture. At the venue will be a number of stalls and exhibitions that will underline the central message of the festival: what is our ecosystem doing for us - and what can we do for our ecosystem. Associated with the festival will be Art and Craft competitions for the school children (illustrating eco-system living), an adventure race exploring the many environmental facets and landuses within the region, evening activities and events and a wide range of entertainment activities.

The entire festival will culminate in a Gala Dinner which will be attended by a number of national and international role players and decision makers and other invited guests. There will also be a number of additional tickets sold to interested parties.

Entrance to the festival will be charged at R30 per adult and R15 per child per day. Special "Full Festival" Tickets will be available at R60 per ticket and will enable you to enter the festival on all 3 days.

Dates: 15th - 17th May 2008
Venue: Southern Cross School, Raptor's View Wildlife Estate, Hoedspruit, Limpopo

Tshukudu Game Lodge

Tshukudu Game Lodge near the Kruger National Park combines home comfort with an exciting Big-Five experience; close encounters with orphans and of course the wild animals in their natural habitat. Now one of South Africa's leading Big 5 private reserves, Tshukudu Game Lodge is where you want to be... Book Online Now!

The lodge, the animals and the people have become part of the lives of our returning guests. With each visit, they experience more and enjoy more than ever before, the ambience of this family run game lodge.

Over the past 27 years the Sussens family has successfully turned a run-down cattle farm into a thriving 5 000 hectare wildlife paradise. The original farmhouse was restored and then extended in later years. 28 guests can be accommodated in the individually decorated chalets and rondawels.
Guests of all ages are welcome and we cater for disabilities in two wheelchair friendly cottages. Luxuriate at the swimming pool on a hot blistering day or enjoy the expansive view from the veranda. An inviting cup of tea beckons, a delicious slice of sweet surprise and then guests are whisked away in search of the elusive Big Five at Tshukudu Game Lodge.

The Sussens family history stretches from across Africa and the European continent, where Alina “Ala” Kuchinska was born in Poland. Ala had a hard life during World War 2 and was later exiled to Zambia. Here she met Alfred “Lolly” Sussens, a professional hunter turned conservationist, and together they made a name for themselves. They were involved in safaris and tourism in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. Ala started the famous “Flame Lily Tours” in conjunction with Rhodesian Airlines, and the “Sundowner Cruises” on the Zambezi.

Later they made a success of the Chobe River Safari Lodge in Botswana. Lolly and Ala then moved to South Africa with their two sons and started from scratch on what is now called Tshukudu Game Lodge.

The former cattle farm, previously owned by President Diedricks demanded hard work and dedication from the whole family. Today their efforts repay them each in their own businesses. Ala runs the lodge and Lolly has earned his retirement.

Ian and his Swiss wife, Sylvia, run a bush camp with educational's for school groups as well as self-catering accommodation. Chris runs a self-catering tented camp. The first animal to ever be re-introduced to the ex cattle farm was a rhino hence the Sotho equivalent word Tshukudu.

The reserve that had started out with no animals turned into a thriving Big-Five game reserve. Animals can be spotted from 4x4 game drive vehicles, on the morning walk before breakfast or during an educational bush walk. Seven years into their labouring the Sussens discovered that there was a great need for healthy lions in game reserves around the country. The area was not very supportive of lions due to the many cattle farms and problems lions crossing from the Kruger National Park were often destroyed. In a bid to solve two problems in one go, the Sussens family offered to take any problem lions, and in turn built up a breeding project. This meant that lions could be rescued and either re-introduced or at the least the next generation would have a chance to be introduced into a different game reserve.

Besides committing their efforts to preserving a piece of nature and breeding lions to ensure healthy generations to come, the Sussens family has also developed a reputation for raising orphaned animals.

No matter the size or shape, animals are welcomed and cared for until they are ready to survive on their own. Everything from birds and squirrels to elephants and giraffe have been given a second chance. And the young lion cubs, Savannah the cheetah and all sorts of other animals have joined the morning walk in their time, making it the amazing experience it is today.
Come find out what so many already know. You have not experienced nature until you have come to Tshukudu.
